Every year, mid-May through August, Loggerhead Sea Turtles nest on Topsail Island. Nesting means that female sea turtles come onshore to lay eggs. Approximately 60 days after the eggs have been deposited, the baby turtles hatch and scamper into the ocean.

Everyone on Topsail Island anticipates “sea turtle time.” It is very important that everyone is aware of sea turtles nesting in order to help protect the turtles. You never want to disturb a sea turtle nest or use lights on the beach at night. You can help the turtles by picking up trash on the beach and making sure there aren’t any holes on the beach (that turtles could fall into).

Learn more about sea turtle nesting through educational programs with the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City, NC. The Karen Beasley Center is dedicated to conserving and preserving marine turtles through rescue and care of sea turtles, wildlife conservation, public education and learning opportunities.
