When Wendy Love and Montica Saldivar graduated from Jacksonville High School in 2005, they had no idea that one day they would start a business that would fulfill both of their dreams. It’s a good thing that like-minded dreamers have a way of connecting and finding one another, because when the timing became right, their business was born.
After high school, Wendy and Montica went their separate ways, both studying cosmetology; Wendy at Miller-Motte in Wilmington and Montica at Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville. Both wanted to work in a hair styling salon and one day have their own business. After graduating cosmetology school, Montica’s dad had a friend who needed help in his barber shop. Monica took the opportunity and went to work for him, honing her hair cutting skills for military cuts and other popular men’s hairstyles. A year later, she asked her friend Wendy, who had also graduated cosmetology school, if she would like to come and work at the barber shop too. Business was obviously booming! Wendy took her up on the offer and worked there for the next six years.
Now this is when the story gets really good. One night, the two girls were out having dinner. Wendy even remembers what they were eating. Sushi! Anything can happen over sushi and wasabi! They were discussing how they had gained great experience working for someone else but they longed to strike out on their own; go into business for themselves. That night, they decided it was time to leave their employer and begin a partnership in a new adventure. They took matters literally, into their own hands, and plans started to percolate!
Gents Men’s Grooming became a reality! They found a place to house their business in the Treasure Realty Shopping Plaza in Sneads Ferry. When I visited them a few days ago, I was able to see how upscale and urban their facility was. Wendy’s dad, Richard Ploof, is a master craftsman and helped create the look by putting in the beautiful wooden vanity and stainless sinks. Two of the walls have white subway tiling and the rest are painted a pleasant gray with white trim. There are a few vintage pieces of furniture placed throughout the shop with big green plants scattered about and a few large chalkboards that convey the barber shop’s prices and type of cuts. The atmosphere is crisp, professional and welcoming!
Gents Men’s Grooming Barber Shop specialize in military razor fades and scissor cuts. They also trim beards. Eighty percent of their clientele is military but men’s grooming (including little boys) is what their business is all about! Discounts are given to the military and first time responders.
You don’t need an appointment to get a haircut at this fine Sneads Ferry establishment. Walk-ins are welcome! I did a bit of homework on my own and found that the reviews of Gents Men’s Grooming were fantastic. One review after another raved about Wendy and Montica’s awesome hair cutting skills. Many of their old Jacksonville customers don’t mind traveling to the “Ferry” for a haircut. I also hear the girls are great conversationists. What’s a real barber shop without a little bit of pleasant chatter? Please give this new business in our fair little coastal town a try. Wendy and Montica have the ability and personalities to make this barber shop a Sneads Ferry institution.
Wendy Love lives with her two little boys ages, eight and three and Montica lives with her fur baby, Addie. Come meet them next time you need a haircut!
