For all of you folks out there who want the freshest seafood available but don’t want to get it the old-fashioned way, (“You get a line, I’ll get a pole,”) there’s a great place in Surf City that prides itself in offering the freshest of the fresh fish in town.
“We take it when it comes in right off the boat, clean it, fillet it, whatever needs to be done and bring it into the store, ice it down and wait for you to walk through the door and buy it,” says JM Mosely, owner, of JM’s Place Seafood and Grocery. “Actually, we’re fishmongers at heart. Everything around here revolves around our seafood counter.”
JM Mosely should know what he’s talking about. He’s been in the seafood business for about thirty years and this business is in his blood. He opened up JM’s Place Seafood and Grocery in 2016, and along with his friend, Mike Hutton, operates his dream job. Their fresh seafood, friendly service and advice on all things “fishy” serves them well and is attributed to their first year’s success.
As noted in the name of the business, there’s more than seafood at this specialty shop. The “grocery” part of the store includes the things needed to take home with you to create the best seafood dishes. There are packaged seafood breaders, spices, and hushpuppy mixes, cocktail and tartar sauces. Pasta and grits are available for seafood dish foundations and you might find a few kinds of vinegar, salsa, and dressings. There is quite a collection of hard-to-find wines (priced between $10.00 and $13.00 a bottle) and a great selection of imported and domestic beers. Some especially popular items are their seafood kits, straight up designed to make your seafood cooking easier. Buy your seafood, choose a seafood kit and dinner is ready!
JM’s Place Seafood and Grocery understands that when you serve a great seafood feast, you may want to serve appetizers. In their cooler, you can find specialty meats (Boar’s Head,) cheeses and crackers. Check out their freezer if you want specialty chowders, bisques, and their great crab cakes.
In the summer, you can find awesome fresh fruits and vegetables to complement your meals. Local vendors bring in their freshest produce straight from the farm to tantalize your taste buds. You can oftentimes buy homemade desserts by “Kaked by Kim.” Cheesecakes are her specialty.
All of these things are wonderful and make for a grand feast, but we know the real star of any meal at the beach is seafood. Summertime offerings at JM’s Place Seafood and Grocery are the best. Grouper, snapper, wahoo, swordfish, halibut, shrimp, scallops, red drum, speckled trout, flounder, clams, oysters, tuna, Mahi, salmon (one of the few imported fish selections from Scotland) and fresh crab meat are readily available. The wintertime selection is not nearly as varied but still offers many all-time favorites.
JM’s Place Seafood and Grocery is not the only business JM Mosley has going on. You can go directly next door to JM’s Pub and Gameroom if you’re feeling a bit thirsty and grab a beer or a cocktail from the bar. There are TV’s, pool tables and games, plus live entertainment on the weekends. Join JM’s Vip Club to be the first to find out about seafood specials. On some weekends, someone cooks up a seafood stew or chowder for the VIP Club members. Ask the friendly staff about that.
Whether you live on Topsail Island or are just visiting, once you visit JM’s Place Seafood and Grocery, it will become part of your Topsail tradition. Go see JM and Mike and see what all this fishy business is about. You’ll be so glad you did!
